Whether you’re looking to turn that basement into a new home theater or a living space for guests, it’s important to keep a few things in mind in order to optimize your design plan.

1- Basement Lighting. Since basements tend to be darker than the rest of the home which sometimes can present a challenge in terms of lighting. For example, glass fixtures can be used in both doors and windows. Glass fixtures on doors will allow more natural light to pour into the basement saving you on electricity and bills. If glass fixtures aren’t your thing, then we’ll want to plan for plenty of light fixtures to make the space more habitable.

2- The Basement Plan. We’ll want to make the basement a multi-functional room which will give you the ability to explore many ideas on what to do with the basement. Basements tend to be a popular spot for entertaining, especially with watching movies. This is common sense and a smart choice for many people because of the room’s natural lighting.

3- Picking the right colors. We will work with you on this section. Which color do you go with? Dark or light? Did you know that lighter colors tend to make a room look larger than it really is? Depending on what you want to do with the space, the colors will make a significant impact.

4- Basement plumbing. Before a basement renovation, they aren’t always the most aesthetically pleasing rooms in the house. Exposed pipes, ducts, and water heaters are common to see. We’ll want to make sure that these items can be easily concealed and if not, we’ll put a plan together to accommodate them naturally into the space.

5- Waterproofing. One of the top things you’ll read when doing research on how to finish a basement is to make sure that the basement is not leaking water. If it is leaking water, fix the leak to prevent major problems down the road including mold, damage to basement carpeting, walls, and insects to name a few. The basement is in fact the lowest point of the home so naturally spills and water will congregate to it. Proper drainage is a necessity. Before any of the basement construction begins, the water leaks will need to be fixed and the basement will need to be dry. Make sure that materials you pick for the remodeling project are also waterproof. You may pay a little more initially, but over the life of the basement, you will save a significant amount of money and not to mention headaches.
